Alex Sapaugh - Coloring Book
Each of these images are a part of a larger body of work which investigates the order of the food chain and different realms of existence that allow for the creation of hybrids and human role displacement. By showcasing visible rotting on the human body, or the celebration and longevity of fruit and inanimate objects through artificial preservation, the value scale is shifted and an understanding of the similarities and interconnectedness of different forms of life come to the surface.
Alex Sapaugh’s work is about showing compassion through displaying different versions of reality and relationships between humans and the other living beings around us. She develops celebratory floral portraits of animals through drawing, painting, and scavenging from old Missouri Conservation magazines and gardening books. Simultaneously, she has been exploring the mixed media and scavenging nature of scrapbooks, and how having to rely solely on yourself to validate your memories can lead to distortion over time. This exploration has allowed and informed an endless world of hybrid versions of reality that can exist. Overall her work demonstrates interconnectedness across nodes in the food chain, and a curiosity for how this looks across different realms.
